Information for Professionals

  • What can I expect when I refer a client?

When you refer a client I will keep you informed after the consultation. As the referring vet I will send you a copy of the full report (with the client's permission) so that you are aware of the behavioural issues and the treatment plan when you see them. If you have any questions about the treatment plan I will happily discuss these with you or other staff involved in the animals' care. I'm always happy to speak to you after a consultation but I know you're very busy so the first time you make a referral I will ask how you would prefer me to communicate with you. Some vets appreciate a call after each consultation and others prefer having a copy of the report on file.

If there is an indication that there is a physical element to the behaviour problem (e.g. pain can lower the threshold for aggression) then I will always speak to you on the phone after the consultation so that you are fully sighted on the issues and how we are approaching treatment.

If behavioural pharmacology is indicated as part of the treatment plan I will discuss this with you before completing the final report . I always make clients fully aware that this is a decision for you as the veterinary surgeon, but that we can discuss treatment options and why it may be helpful as an adjunct to behaviour therapy. If the treatment plan involves the practice in any way e.g. if a dog is vet phobic, I will talk with the staff team to discuss what is feasible for you and create a treatment plan that you are happy with and is as unintrusive for staff and other clients as possible.

  • How do I refer a client?

I'll need you to complete a referral form. The first time you wish to refer a client you or someone else from the practice can get in touch and I will email it to you. To get in touch you can use the contact form in this website and I will call you or you can call or email directly (contact details at the bottom of this page). You can store the referral form on file so that you have it for future use.

  • Training & Workshops

Half day or full day training can be offered to staff as part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). This can be tailored to your individual needs but topics could include:

    • Introduction to companion animal behaviour
    • Understanding specific behavioural disorders commonly seen in practice (e.g. aggression, separation related behaviour, fear and phobias)
    • Dogs who are afraid of the vets
    • Temperament assessments

Workshops are usually half a day and are more practical, for example "creating a behaviourally aware veterinary practice" includes information on behaviourally aware microchipping and the effects of neutering on behaviour but also involves your whole staff team in creating a plan for your practice. This is informative and fun, and has benefits for your clients and their animals.

If you want to discuss any training or workshops, which can all be specifically designed for your needs, get in touch using the contact for on this website and I will call you or you can call or email directly using the contact information at the bottom of this page.

Training and workshops are usually charged as £250 per half day or £400 for a whole day (up to 10 staff). If you have more staff or would like a series of CPD courses then get in touch and I will provide a cost after we've talked about what you're looking for.

I'm an experienced lecturer and you can find more information about my experience on the "about me" page and some feedback from former students on the "testimonials" page.

  • Services for vet practices & other organisations

There are add-on services that may be of interest to you and your clients.

Puppy parties are a great service for clients and for the prevention of future behaviour problems. I have an 8 week syllabus that can be delivered to clients one evening a week for 8 weeks, or this can be tailored to you and the needs of your clients.

Behaviour talks can be a great way of engaging clients, these can be one-off talks on the subject of your choice or a series of talks. If you're a rescue centre these could be tailored for potential adopters or for people who have re-homed one of your animals. Topics could include:

    • Training
    • Introduction to dog behaviour
    • Introduction to cat behaviour
    • Preventing behaviour problems
    • Understanding separation related behaviour
    • Understanding aggression
    • Understanding fears and phobias

I can provide copies of newsletters that you can display for clients / potential adopters.

You're very welcome to get in touch and we can talk about exactly what you're looking for.
